Baby Food

I have heard so many things about giving your child baby food before 6 months is a no no. I have been picking a lot of parents' brains about this topic and the advice from my babies doctor is NO. I know when my little girl is hungry and I'm going to feed her.

I have recently started putting cereal in her bottles along with her formula. Is that OK? And when is the right age for those foods.

Baby Food

Most doctors would recommend that you only start solids at 6 months as this is when the enzymes in the tummy is developed enough to be able to digest these foods. However, you will know when your baby is ready. Try one spoon of porridge every day for a couple of days and see how it goes. If you feel he's ready, then he is ready. A lot of parents start their babies on solid foods at 4 months, especially if the baby seems hungry between feeds.

Diet as tolerated

I really think it depends on your baby's development because there are some babies who just develop right away. There are those who go with the norm, and there are some who are a bit behind schedule.

You know your baby best. My youngest, who is a year old now, is already eating chicken bits, rice and noodles. He already has 8 teeth up and down and I think he can bite and chew better than most.

I talk to him as I would talk to my 3 year old and tell him what to do with the food? like "bite it first", "chew well", "don't swallow it whole" and stuff like that. And he seems to be following it.

Of course I also checked this with my pediatrician. Her advice is: "diet as tolerated", but not let him eat too much because his tummy's still small. And to not give him different kinds right away so we'll know if he's allergic to something. And of course, continue with the milk because he needs the nutrients for continuous brain development.
