Baby Has Constipation

by Mavis
(Chantilly, VA)

My 7 week old baby has constipation. She was fine for the first 2 weeks. But now its really bad. My doctor told me to give her Karo Syrup which I tried and it didn’t work.

The hospital visiting nurse also told me to mix half tea spoon brown sugar with 2 oz baby water. I tried that also and it didn’t work. A friend of mine said she mixed a little milk of magnesia in her babies formula and it helped. I haven’t tried that. My sister too said I should mix apple juice with water.

What I did was, I got the front section that is used to get the mucus out of the nose. I put warm water in it with Vasciline on the tip of the tube and on my babies bottom and than push the water in her rectum. She was able to go then. I don't want her to get used to that option. Please help me, I don’t know what to do. She will be 6 weeks in 2 days.

Prune Juice

Have you tried a tea spoon of prune juice every other feeding? This worked well for all my kids when having the same problems.

Are You Breast Feeding Or Is She On Formula
by: Sonali Sadiq

Are you breast feeding or is she on formula? In any of the cases it is ok for her to not pass motions for up to 7 days. I suggest you let her get her system working on her own rather than trying to help her with any of the other available options.

I completely agree with your views on getting her used to artificial means.

If you are now feeding her formula, then you may want to change it after you have spoken to her doctor. But if she is exclusively breast fed, I don't think you need to worry until 7 days have passed.
