My doctor advised to start feeding my son home food at 5 months. She advised to not feed him ready made (OTC) baby cereal immediately as she was of the opinion that they contain more sugar. And the baby gets used to eating sugary stuff.
She also advised on starting with home cooked food - rye with milk, rice+lentils mash, bean soup, fruit juice, fruit mash etc. All prepared with minimal salt/sugar and ghee. Keeping in mind that each new food be introduced slowly and steadily at a gap of 3-4 days.
Start Babies On Cereal by: Aida
Pediatricians advise parents not to start babies on cereal till 4 months in most cases.
When babies are born their tummies are not yet mature. They require a few months in most cases to get their digestive system on track. It is important to allow this to happen in order to avoid extra colics, constipation, and gas... all of which are painful enough without adding to it.
Babies require feeding every so often depending on their milk intake. As their system mature their intake becomes larger allowing for longer periods of time after each feeding.
Remember to first start a baby with rice to avoid allergies. Introducing any solid to a baby should be gradually. If you are planning on adding it to the bottle, begin with half a spoon for a few days in order to check the reaction. Check stools and babies mood. Avoid giving cereals day after day, for it makes digestion harder. Skip a day in between.
Starting babies on cereals too early is known to cause obesity and other diseases. Ask your doctor before you do.
6 Months by: Anonymous
They tell people these days not to start baby on solids until 6 months. And for wheats and things 1 yr old, but you can buy baby rice and baby breakfast which you can give.
They say 4-6 months on the packets but most nurses say start from 6 months. If you feel like your baby needs filling a bit more or your baby is not sleeping well in the night due to hunger or you need some extra advise you will be best seeing your health visitor or doctor.
It is normally best to see them before you change your or your baby's diet anyway.
Baby Cereal by: Anonymous
My son is four months old. A lot of other moms I know told me that I could give him some baby cereal in his bottle to help him sleep through the night when he was 2.5 months old.
I also spoke to my pediatrician and decided to wait. At our last appointment, the Doctor gave us the go ahead to feed our son rice cereal.
I suggest you definitely speak to your pediatrician. He/she will know where your baby is developmentally and what the current suggestions for starting food are. Just make sure your baby is still getting lots of milk/formula. That is still the most important thing for the first year. Hope this helps!
3 Months Old by: courtney
My baby girl started on cereal before she was 3 months old. The doctor recommends that you at least wait till 3 months old, but that was the only way we could get her to sleep. If she didn't have cereal she would be waking up every so often wanting more food and with cereal she would wake up only once during the night!
