Baby Playing In Her Crib

by Anonymous

The one thing I find difficult, is to stop my baby playing in her crib at night. Since about 4 months old her bedtime routine included sponge cleaning, changing to pajamas and having a bottle. I have always tried to put her down again when she woke. But till now, whenever I place her into her cot, she becomes alert and starts to play! It seems she loves being in her cot and to play there.

I made it a rule for everyone NOT to play with her when she is in her cot. Now I try to read to her whenever she is in her crib, but she still thinks I am playing with her!

What can you advise? She is 8 months old now.

Help For Going To Sleep

I think that removing all toy type items is important, otherwise the crib is just another play area. Our babies always enjoyed soft quiet music to go to sleep with. It is soothing and relaxing. It is a habit that sticks with them for years.

Advice for Babies Playing in Cribs
by: Sotiris

My wife and I have read a lot of material on babies playing in cribs and have had impressive results with our son (12+ months old now). Our advice in a nutshell is this: put her in her cot while she is still awake, avoid staying in the room no matter how playful her mood seems to be.

There are several good books and articles on the subject. Invest some time in studying a couple of approaches.

There is a sequence of actions that should comprise your bedtime routine and several do's and dont's.

The key always is consistency and patience (at first she will protest and try her best to lure you back in her room; you should do so only at fixed intervals - 3 to 5 minutes initially - and only to reassure her you are right next door and remind her it's time to go to sleep now).

Some of this may sound too cruel to some parents, however it's a technique that works admirably well. Give it 2-4 days at most and your baby will essentially "learn" how to put herself to sleep alone; which is the key to bedtime peace for years to come.
