Baby Stopped Eating

by Chris
(Italy)

My baby stopped eating. He is 2 and a half years old, up until 2 months ago he would eat pastina with meat and vegetables and a meat stock. Then for no reason he decided he did not want to eat it anymore.

I thought that maybe he was getting bored with the food which is understandable. So we tried with other foods, white pasta, pasta and sauce, meats, vegetables, milk and biscuits. He would pick at them and not eat them. The pediatrician says it is a phase and we should give him vitamins. He is hungry, because he eats a bread roll in 30 seconds but refuses to even try new food. He has now lost half a kilo in 4 weeks. Please any suggestions?

Not Stopped Eating
by: Margaret Watson

Your baby has not stopped eating . He has just stopped eating certain foods and the weight loss is worrying you. He is old enough to have his own opinions and also to realize that not eating can be a way of getting lots of attention. Are you still spoon feeding him?

Try offering a variety of finger foods instead. If he won't eat a particular vegetable there are plenty of others. Keep an eye on his weight. He may be getting too much milk. His development has slowed up at this age so he doesn't need so much. Do not be tempted to give too many sweet things. If his weight does continue to fall then ask for a second opinion if your pediatrician still dismisses the problem.
