Does Not Take Naps

by Terri
(Hong Kong)

My 8 months son does not take naps. Since he loves to flip, roll over, sit up, and even stand up in his crib, it's been extremely difficult for him to take his regular naps... even though he is definitely sleepy. But he is also mentally active and will scream murder (cry non-stop) when I put him down for his naps.

This never happened before. He slept very well since 3 months. Sometimes we have to resort to putting him in his stroller and go for a short walk and then he will go to sleep very quickly. One of the reasons being that he can't roll over or stand up!

What should I do to get him to nap on time without him either screaming or keep getting up?

Changing Sleep Patterns
by: Margaret Watson

Your son is getting older so you will notice changing sleep patterns compared to a few months ago.

He has also learned that if he yells he gets attention. At this age he needs a short nap after breakfast - wake or get him after about 40 minutes. Then after lunch 2 hours. If he gets less than one hour sleep at this time, give him another short nap at about 5 o'clock. Use blackout curtains.

If he yells, go in, say firmly that it is time for sleep and then silently put him down in his bed again. If you need to repeat this, do it in silence. My oldest daughter's record was getting up 17 times in one evening at 15 months - she could climb out of her cot. This silent treatment and a darkened room worked for us after 3 nights. This is obviously causing you stress. So I suggest you share your concerns with someone.
