Eating Through The Night

by Kiana
(Portland, OR)

My 7.5 month old son is still eating through the night. In fact, he eats nearly every hour from 10:30 p.m. to about 3:30 p.m.

I initially thought that maybe he's just going through a growth spurt. However, it's been like this for the last couple of months. My daughter, at 7 months, was already sleeping through the night.

I understand that no two children are alike, but as siblings I thought there would be some similarities.

Any ideas on how I can cut down on his nighttime eating?

Sleep Through The Night
by: Rachna

When your baby gets up at night, try to put him to sleep again without feeding him, until he gets up for the next time!

If he gets up at 12:30, don't play with him, but try to put him to sleep... he might sleep for an hour or two. When he gets up again... then feed him!

Do this for 2 to 3 days to test it and then slowly start to shift timings.

Replace The Formula
by: Paige, pink_ice_69_@hotmail.com

My daughter, Brettley, is one year old and she still doesn't sleep through the night, but she has finally started to not want the bottle at night.

I would start by just giving her water instead of formula, and eventually she wont want it any more. It worked for my daughter. She is a really big baby, so I thought she was more frequently hungry than normal babies. But the doctor advised that despite her size, after 6 months there is no reason they should need formula for more than every 6 hours at night.

Maybe you could try giving more formula before bed. Brettley was on 6, but we moved it up to 8 and she got up less also. Now she just gets up for her passy (teething).

Protein Intake
by: Leatitia

My baby didn't sleep through until he was 10 months old. He is now 13 months old. Ensure that you include enough protein in his diet during the day. This will keep him full during the night. Best of luck.

Gerber Baby Cereal
by: Anonymous

Have you tried giving him any Gerber baby cereal? My 4 month daughter is sleeping all through the night since we started her on it... she used to do what you said your son does. She has been on it for over a month and it really seems to help.

Put about 4 spoonfuls or so in each feeding. Try that and see if it helps.

Replace Food With Water
by: Blerina

I would suggest you replace food with water. Despite the fact that your baby may be angry and cry, let this happen for a while and within some days you will see that your baby will not wake up at night, as water is not so good as food.
