Ensure A Balanced Baby Diet

How do I ensure a balanced baby diet for a 7 months old baby?

I can only think of 2 fruits that are a bit safe - papaya and banana.

I have no idea what vegetables a 7 month old baby can eat. I hear spinach is a no-no till 8 months old. Any suggestions about what vegetables I can give her?

Balanced Baby Diet
by: Catherine

I have an opinion about what makes a balanced baby diet. But first, I found that mashed avocado, cooked pureed pumpkin and cooked pureed pear are fabulous first foods. Although my baby loves a wide variety of foods and I tried papaya/pawpaw early, she wouldn't eat it.

I also found that bananas constipated her, which was awful to deal with.

While you're still breastfeeding or giving formula you don't need to worry so much about a balanced diet, as the milk provides what they need and the solids are just an introduction to foods and a bonus nutritionally.

I was at a Breastfeeding Association meeting the other day and they were saying that you don't really need to worry about a balanced baby diet quite like with adults.

You take the period to be balanced nutritionally over say a week rather than a meal or a day as for adults, which I found interesting. I don't think you need to worry about it until 10 or more months at a minimum.

Baby Foods To Try
by: Anonymous

Here are my suggestions for a few baby foods to try. I find that my 8 month old daughter likes to eat a wide range of fruits and vegetables. Turnips are slightly sweet and a favorite, also mashed beans and pretty much anything else.

The Public Health nurse advised to let her taste as wide a variety of food as possible, as early as possible so as to increase her palette early. She also advised not to just stick to sweet fruits and vegetables so the baby does not develop a dislike of other foods.

I try to make thick fruit smoothies for her and that way manage to introduce a wide range of fruits. Ahe seems to enjoy these.

One of the suggestions I have is that my baby loved cauliflower, cheese and sweet potato at your baby's age.
