Feed Baby Food Tips & Tricks

Feed Baby Food

Are you about to feed baby food?

However many other babies you know, however many antenatal classes you attend, even however many children you already have , it doesn't prepare for this particular baby.

How & When to Start

They are all the same - they need loving, feeding, and changing, but they are all different. You can listen to advice - from your mother, a friend, the health visitor, but in the end it is up to you and your baby. Some will take to mixed feeding easily from about 5 months old while others just don't want to know.

Some swallow easily while other seem to spit out as much as they take in. Just don't worry, they aren't necessarily rejecting what you have prepared. They just haven't learned how to cope with it.

Babies will not starve themselves, even the most stubborn ones. Just wait a few days and try again. And persist. It takes even the cleverest child a while to learn how to take food  to the back of their mouth and swallow.

And all those new flavors. Imagine if someone gave you something new every day! There are bound to be some you prefer to others.  So, don't be in a hurry to introduce too many new foods in a short time.

Because you feed baby food in very tiny amounts at first...

There Will Be Some Waste

Put a little of the food in a dish at a time. Make sure you don't put the spoon you are using to feed the baby back in the main jar or food may become contaminated and spoil in the fridge.

There is plenty of other advice on how to feed baby food. See the Weston Price web page at http://www.westonaprice.org/children/feeding.html  or the big manufacturers such as Gerbers have useful advice, even for those who aren't buying their foods.

They will tell you about the various stages your baby is going through from breast milk right through to eating  a dish with the family. See the Gerber home page at http://www.gerber.com/

Feed Baby Food He Can Handle Himself

As your baby grows older you will want to encourage his independence. As soon as he can sit alone and has developed a reliable finger and thumb grip you can begin giving him finger food such as rusks, grated cheese, pieces of cereal and so on.

Just remember how tiny a baby's throat is and always make sure an adult is present when your baby is feeding himself in case of accidents.

Every day he will be developing and the look of triumph when he at last manages to pick up a tiny sultana or piece of banana will make you so joyful. He will drop a lot at first, get it in his hair, on the floor, the wall and even the ceiling, but some will go where he wants it to. This will spur him on to greater success. And won't you be proud
