How Do I Get Baby To Eat?

by Lynne
(Auckland, New Zealand)

How do I get Baby to eat?

I have a baby girl who is 10 1/2 months old. And I am getting concerned about her eating.

Originally she was eating a variety of pureed
vegetables, fruits and yogurt. And then at about 8 1/2 months she refused to eat any of them anymore. She would simply push the food away with her tongue or spit it out.

I have tried her on:
- finger foods and she will only eat crackers,
- cheese on toast,
- yogurt & fruit,
- apple or pear slices,
- salami
- carrot sticks, and...
- very occasionally small pieces of chicken.

I try to introduce a new food every couple of days or try her again with ones she has rejected like pasta, small jam sandwiches, beef, lamb, mashed potato, baby porridge, weetbix, orange, banana, avocado, etc.

Do you have any suggestions how to get Baby to eat, eating more and not dropping her food over the side of her highchair?

My baby is still is a good weight range. She is 10 1/2 months old and at her last weigh she was 9.62kgs & 78cms in height.

Many Thanks.

Try Imitation For Getting Baby To Eat
by: Aida

Maybe it is time to try a different approach - reverse psycology. It often works for getting baby to eat.

You don't mention if you are breastfeeding, but if you are... don't worry so much.

If you aren't, see if the formula you use is fortified.

Babies are all different. The truth is, during the first year solid foods are more of an experimental transition. They need nutrition, but not necessarly solid foods. But whatever you do, don't get stressed.

Your baby will sense it and push the food even farther away. They simply know you are concerned

Try this trick...

Sit her on your lap during your meals for her to watch you eat. Go about it normally. Talk to others. Enjoy your food, but divide the food on your plate in two. Half of it with food that you'll eat, the other half with food she can eat. And make sure that side is next to her and at close enough range.

Try a little bit of mashed potatoes, cooked carrots, a 1/4 of a sliced apple (it's small enough to grab, big enough not to choke on). And try doing so regularly, if you want to eat a snack, make sure your baby is in your arms (try healthy snacks).

Imitation goes a long way to get baby to eat. Keep a moist cloth around and paper towels. It might be a bit messy cause she'll most likely go for it with her hands. Let her do so.

Ask if you can help her and offer the spoon. Try not to stop her if she prefers the hand. She's trying too.

I hope this helps. It worked for me.
