Mashing All Food

by Allison
(QLD)

I am still mashing all food for my 18 month old baby girl. She will spit out anything lumpy or gag and throw up. I have tried all kinds of finger food but she won’t chew it. She has 12 teeth and loves anything as long as it is mashed (without hard lumps) or pureed.

I am concerned that this will halt or interfere with her development in some way. All other babies I know seem to be eating. Do you perhaps have some wisdom I can use?

Baby not chewing
by: Anonymous

Hmmm - sounds as though your baby would rather have all the hard work done for her; cannot be bothered to do her own chewing, LOL. I doubt it will impact her development, and as long as she is eating well you ought not to worry.

I would go along with the mashing for a while, and gradually increase the lumpiness so she gets used to it slowly. Also if you are not doing so already, offer interesting finger food that she can easily manage by herself. This should interest her in things other than her mashed stuff. No wisdom I can offer except that babies seem to march to the tune of their own private drummers, and there is little that we can do about it! Good luck.
