Nutrition For 17 Month Old Baby

I am concerned about my 17 month old baby's nutrition. How do I know he getting what he needs?

He seems to be getting tired of the bland taste of steamed veggies and is beginning to show interest in more tasty seasoned foods, like the food my husband and I eat.

Can my little boy's stomach handle the seasonings and spices our stomachs can? What is the best way to cook my child's meals when he wants to begin exploring new tastes?

Herbs And Spices For Baby
by: Aida

Think about adding herbs and spices for baby, such as:

o vanilla *
o pepper
o garlic powder
o basil
o rosemary
o dill
o oregano
o lemon zest
o ginger
o cinnamon (beware of allergic reactions)
o mint
o nutmeg
o curry powder (may produce rash)

Bare in mind that all spices should be introduced mildly and gradually one at a time leaving a few days in between introductions to check for reactions.

Regarding vanilla and other liquid flavor extracts: Pure vanilla and other liquid flavors/extracts often contain a high amount of alcohol. Make sure that you are using either the vanilla bean or an essence of vanilla that is not labeled as "pure".

Never add any sort of flavoring to your baby's bottle of formula or bottle of breast milk!

These spices can be lovely additions to your baby's foods once he's a toddler. Children learn to enjoy food more through family. Cook a few dishes for your family milder than you would typically in order to share with your baby. This enriches the experience for him and allows him to cope with new tastes better. You can look up recipes for toddlers online.

Also consider the fact that a child has a smaller appetite than expected. Feed your baby small dozes of nutrients throughout the day, keeping a well balanced diet in mind. It is important to mix various kinds of foods so that his requirements of nutrients can be met.

No Fried Food
by: Courtney

I would reccommend that you boil your food that you give him. Do not give any fried foods, because it contains too much fat and at this age is not healthy for him.

Baby Food Seasoning
by: Anonymous

I would say start off with very little seasoning. Baby will definitely notice the new flavors after having bland foods for so long. Maybe start with fresh herbs rather than store-bought dried ones. That way you know there aren't any extra ingredients in the herbs. Just like when you started on solids, introduce one new thing at a time to weed out any food allergies.
