Refuses to eat without TV

by Gayatri Gupte
(London)

My 20 months old daughter refuses to eat without TV. She eats only if something of her choice is on.No matter how hungry she is, she wouldn't have her next bite if the TV channel of her choice is not on. She eats really slowly and each meal lasts for an hour. She has just 4 and a half teeth and I don't know if that could be the reason. I am quite frustrated and tired now.

TV baby

I suppose you do not need anyone to tell you that eating in front of the TV is not the best habit to have, even for toddlers. And you may be right about her eating slowly because of having relatively few teeth.

Do you feed her or does she feed herself? Why not let her try feeding herself? She may find that very interesting and it could be one way to wean her off the TV.

Or you could involve her in another activity in a room other than the TV room, such as looking at a nice book or playing with a favorite toy and so on. You can then just start to feed her without her even noticing. I wonder if that will work, wish you all the best, a fussy eater can make a mom tear her hair out. So full sympathy there.
