Suddenly sleeping

My 5 month granddaughter is suddenly sleeping most of the day; only up for a hour or so then back to sleep for 2 or 3 hours. She is teething, and having a hard time with it. We are not giving her any drugs for her teeth. I am scared there could be something wrong. She was taking two naps a day now its three and four naps.

She is restless during the night. But this just seems like a lot of sleep. This started 48 hours ago.

Sleeping all day
by:

You say your granddaughter is sleeping all day, but also say that she is having three or four naps during the day. How many hours is she actually sleeping during 24 hours? For lots of babies this number of naps would be their normal routine. Also sleeping patterns do change.

Babies who at first seem to sleep all the time can become very lively and vice versa. The teething which is causing the restless nights must be tiring her. How long is baby sleeping at night? At this age she is becoming more active when she is awake and will probably (all babies are different) need 11 or 12 hours plus two or more naps. Of course this is only a guideline.

Have there been other changes to her routine recently? I am sure this sleeping all day is only a temporary problem and nothing to really worry about. If you are really concerned then see your physician or other health professional.

Can teething make baby sleepy
by: Anonymous

Teething can make a child fussy and irritable and so on, and it can have different impacts on babies? sleep patterns ? some babies seem to sleep more when they are teething, while others seem to sleep less, and get up more often and finding it more difficult to get back to sleep.

It could be that your grandchild is getting a little more tired with the fretting (you said she is having a hard time with the teething) and so is sleeping more. I think that if the baby is sleeping more, just take that as a welcome side effect!
