Three Months Old

My baby is three months old (if you count by weeks). She almost died at 2 weeks. She spent 5 weeks in the hospital, 3 in ICU and 2 in pediatrics. She was stuck in a bed for the most part of being in the hospital. She didn't really get much belly time.

I'm worried that she is behind in the milestones when it comes to head and neck control. I am not really sure how to help her with this milestone.

When I put her on her tummy she pretty much falls asleep instantly or gets extremely angry but unlike other babies she doesn't really lift her head when she's angry. I am a little worried that this may be a sign of an oncoming mental disability. When she was first born and they had her laying on her stomach in the nursery, people would walk by and comment because she would be holding her head up and looking at the other 2 babies in the nursery with her.

I am also worried about her turning abilities. Because it is a similar situation as the head problem. When she was about 4 or 5 days old she was rolling herself on her side, but she doesn't do that anymore.

I would also like to know how much do normal babies that didn't have so many problems in the first weeks of their life weigh and eat. My baby is 3 approximately 3 months and she only weighs about 10lbs and she is only eating at most 5oz.

If you could please offer any advice at all as to how I can help my little girl gain weight, eat more, and accomplish the milestones in the time frame normal babies follow, I would greatly appreciate it.

In the same boat

It is so hard to say as I am in the same boat. Was your daughter a preemie? My son was born at 27 weeks, was in the NICU for 7 weeks, home for 12 days and ended up back in the hospital for 1 month and almost died. He was on a ventilator for 10 days, and not being held for almost 3 weeks.

He is very behind and has also had some setbacks. He started to roll over, but then quit. He was cooing and babbling and he quit. He has poor trunk control. Head still sometimes falls back when his neck gets tired.

He is working with PT/OT to try and get this back. Speech is also going to come and see him. I would suggest talking to your local hospital about getting your child in a 0-3 program that gives you all of these services. Also talk to your pediatrician.
