Too Much Water

by Adina
(Jacksonville, Florida)

I have a 8 1/2 months baby, he eats solids since the 4 month. What is the reason for a baby drinking too much water? I have a 8 1/2 months baby. He eats solids since 4 months in parallel with breast-feeding, and he has drinks of milk and diluted fruit juices between and after solid meals.

Recently (for the past 7-10 days) he started to ask for much more water/juice drink than before. He seems to need drinks all the time and 500ml in 24h are not enough, even if I still breastfeed him in parallel. He doesn't ask for more food than normal, he only accepts drinks in addition.

I am not sure how much liquid a baby should drink at 8 months, and whether he drinks too much or not, but the sudden increase in demand was what worried me. He used to drink at most 100ml in 24h just up to 10 days ago.

I did not make any change in his solids diet, which I follow by the book. Could you advise me about the potential cause of this sudden increase of water demand? And what do you suggest I do now? Drinking more water
by: Anonymous

I am not an expert, but I do not think that drinking more water can harm your child. There may be no need to worry, particularly if the baby is eating and breast feeding as usual, and thriving otherwise.

Consider the weather - could it be that it got hotter recently? Hot weather can make babies sweat and lose a lot of water resulting in them drinking more water than normal.

Another reason could be if a baby mastered to drink by himself or from a new or interesting sippy cup, so he enjoys going through the motions even when he is not really thirsty.
