Unable To Sit Up Unaided

by Sheila
(UK)

My 10 months old son is still unable to sit up unaided or crawl. When he is on his tummy he just reaches for toys but doesn't move around. He turns on to his tummy from his back though. What suggestions do you have that may help?

Slow To Crawl
by: Courtney K

If your baby is large-sized s/he may be a little slow to crawl. Weight has a lot too do with it, just as it does in an adult. However, your baby should be showing signs of crawling, such as pushing up with hands, etc.

If still concerned, ask your pediatrician. There are also toys to help babies develop those type of skills. You may want to look into something like that.....

Should Be Able To Sit Unaided
by: Sr Lyn Wade

Your little one should be able to sit unaided by now. These are milestones that should be reached by a certain age, but if they are not, then a visit to an Occupational Therapist is highly recommended.

She will be able to give you exercises to do with your little one and I'm sure s/he will do this in a short time. But keep in mind, by not doing anything about it will have long term consequences - e.g. difficulty with school work.

Development Questions
by: mauro tatini

I'd like to start of with a few development questions. How is s/he with head control? Also, is the baby very active, or not really?

My wife and I wanted to have a "full on" experience with our first baby (he's 9 months old now) and because of that, we held him a lot - played with him a lot. Both me and my wife stayed at home during this time (I work from time to time with bands as a road manager, and work has been slow, and she's not working at all) - so we had how to share this time. As a result (and we knew this would happen) he is more than a hand full: he always wants to be doing something, very rarely he stays put.

He was sleeping from 7 pm to 6 am since a week before he turned 3 months, so we're not complaining. He is almost crawling (gets really frustrated about it), sits well and I put a hand bar on this play area where he can reach and get up - he loves to stay up by himself, holding the bar.

My suggestion is first to make sure his head control is fine - if not, more tummy time, and holding him with his tummy down, head by your elbows, where he can lift his head to look at things. Even though he might be too heavy for this now. My son is wearing 12 to 18 months clothing (barely!) - his amazingly heavy, and even I can't do it for too long now (I'm a big guy) - also, put him on the floor, help him sit, and keep opening his legs so he has control.

It took us about two weeks of that for him to really like doing it. We'd put pillows around him (back and sides) and toys in front of him. I'm sure if you put the time aside (a little, three times a day - don't let him get mad/frustrated about it) he'll be sitting up in no time.

Also, rolling is very important. If he's doing that already, you're on the right track.
